Sometimes you need more than just Brute Force !

Mike Revelle from Brute Force gives us the lowdown on their last event.

Over the past few months, we have become very acquainted with the scenery of the Mass Pike and Interstate 91. The Hartford skyline, the basketball hall of fame, the Connecticut River and a seemingly abandoned trolley museum have all been fleeting sights in our travels. This past Saturday, the 18th of March, we had the pleasure of viewing them again on our trip to Xtreme Paintball in East Winsor, CT for the Monty Python scenario game, hosted by the field and their factory team, Xtreme Shenanigans.

General Sean Connell and XO Bryce McCarthy of Team Brute Force, upon arrival at the field, were soon at work plotting their strategies while walking the turf. The conditions looked swell, compared to the mounds of snow that we encountered just weeks earlier. Yes, there were some puddles, but we’d take a Lady of the Lake over an abominable snowman any day. Soon, the staff was ready to start the opening ceremonies.

After quick introductions and explanations by Dave Gorski, writer and director of the game, the generals gave their motivational speeches. Quotes were recited and coconuts were smashed, giving all attendees at least some sense of motivation...or discomfort, one of those. First mission was set to begin at quarter of eleven, and the troops dispersed for final preparations.

Our mission involved finding a holy hand grenade, and returning it to our base, Castle AARRGGHH. It seemed simple enough, and an aggressive start to the game added to the ease. But, when we, nor any of the other knights, couldn't find the grenade, the simplicity faded. To make matters worse, we were getting heavily pushed back to our base. Luckily, Paul Christopher of Brute Force was back-handed by destiny and stumbled upon the grenade, cleverly hidden in the pile of sticks that made up his bunker. Paul and a posse of 7 or 8 men ran back to the base with the grenade, securing the first mission and its 100 points.

The following mission proved to be much more difficult than the first. After losing critical field position during the first mission, the pressure was on to find 4 green-stickered pods and a box of shrubberies before the other team could find the Trojan rabbit parts. Unfortunately, the pods were recovered, but the box was intercepted and the mission was lost. Losing did not stop the Knights of Ni, however, for a small squad of men including Nolan Aldridge and Pete Montgomery of Brute Force, were able to overrun the Round Tables base. The score was split 50-50 for a beyond noble effort by both teams.

After a long 4 hours of just two missions, both teams were exhausted. They had played their hearts out, and became low on resources. The event staff made the right decision, and put all chips on the table after the short lunch break following the second mission. The final battle was next.

Since we had roped all 10 of our paint cases through the Eteks, Egos, and Geos, that proved they could handle billions and billions of paintballs without sputtering, we had to buy some more cases for the last battle. The last battle was to last an hour, with unlimited recycle occurring the whole time. Obviously, paint conservation was going to be a must. Having to leave our Valken Packs, which could support up to 10 pods each, almost empty was depressing. The Energy Batteries in our guns were on their dying breath, but they reassured us that they weren’t going to give up on us yet. We’ve always been firm believers in spiritual connections between gear and players, and never had we felt the connection to be so strong than at that moment.

When the teams lined up on the fields, the match seemed pretty even. However, there wouldn’t be any fun if a twist wasn’t thrown in. Fallen Angels, the team that had stood loyally beside us all day, was thrown onto the other side. Throughout the event, every player on the Knights of Ni had worked together and built bonds that gave us a huge edge. For the Angels to be stripped from us put a huge dent in our mojo. The game’s objective was to secure the Holy Grail, located in the middle of the fortress on the center of the field, which was something we couldn’t allow the Angels, or King Arthur’s men, to do.

When it began, 120+ people were all at once shooting in a confined spool field. That’s a lot of paint. Without our new eclipse pants that have super-awesome padding, we would have been eliminated far more times in the mayhem. For an hour the heat was intense, and all bets about conserving paint had been virtually called off. In the last five minutes, though, all the idle players who had stuck to their bunkers became lively and joined in the fight. When the buzzer sounded, defeated looks appeared on everybody’s faces. It appeared as though the game had ended in a tie. But, when a young-gun no taller than a parking meter emerged from the fortress, victory was secured for King Arthur and the Round Table.

Despite a loss, we and everybody on the KWSN were in good spirits. The game had been fun all day long, and the final battle was no exception. We took a trip down to the Steeel Reserve and CTC compound, where we shared our funny stories from the battlefield for the remainder of the afternoon, until it was time for awards. Fallen Angels and a youth with great sportsmanship walked away with the Knights of Ni commemoratives, while the hero of the game and Maltese Militia got the Round Table awards.

It was a day of loss, but also a day of Victory for us. We left the field that day with a new brother in arms. The brother is the field of Xtreme Paintball, and all of its amazing teams that we had the pleasure of playing with. And though we didn’t get to play with Xtreme Shenanigans, their obvious hard work preparing the game, and downright phenomenal job of reffing, assured us that they are going to be great companions throughout our speedball endeavors. It looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot more of the deserted trolley museum and the Connecticut River, and we couldn’t be happier about it.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and especially Planet Eclipse for providing the team with great markers and gear to use. We look forward to the rest of the year and hopefully one of these events we will be able to play beside Marc from Planet Eclipse.
