OPL E3: July 2017
After a week of heavy rain, the weather couldn’t have been better for OPL E3
hosted at Ground Zero Paintball in Ganonoque, Ontario on July 28th and
29th
After Momentum failed to move passed the preliminary stage in the D3 division, Attrition, led by NXL pro Ben Challenger of the Trade My Gun Outlaws, seized hold of the opportunity and took hold of their first event win. With Dorito side player Klayton Morris attacking relentlessly, and OPL all-star Mark Gawlikowski holding down the middle of the field, the Chargers D3 team were beat convincingly 4-1. While the Chargers D3 team did not manage to top the podium, they still produced their best finish of the season capturing 2nd place thanks to the coaching of their NXL D2 player Brett Robinson.
In the fight for 3rd place we saw Kitchener Recon, led by Dynasty coach Rusty Glaze, face the Halifax Hitmen. While these two teams may not have made it to the finals, their game was far more thrilling to watch. After tying the game 3-3, Kitchener Recon opted to run out the clock and force the overtime point. Despite the play of Hitmen player Jannick Beaudoin, from the NXL semi-pro team Montreal Image, it was Nelson Fonseca of Kitchener Recon who proved that age is only a number by running the field and taking out 4 players in overtime to win 3rd place.
In D4 spectators were able to watch some very competitive games, as most of the quarter finals matches could have gone to either team. Stratford Storm topped the Mississauga Chargers and the Joyceville Juveniles beat the Peterborough Bad Boyz both games ending in a score of 3-2, while the battle of Cambridge was won in overtime seeing the Raiders best the Commandos 5-4. Comparatively, the Leisure Kings picked up a mercy win over the Rebels D4 team, 5-0.
The Cambridge Raiders and the Leisure Kings blew by their competition in the semis, 5-0 and 4-2 respectively, to battle it out in the finals. The Cambridge Raiders did not find their competition to be as easily bested in the finals as the experienced Leisure Kings were able to triumph over the youthful Raiders camp by a score of 4-2. Not only was this their first win of the season, but it was also their first podium finish!
As in D4, the OPL D5 division had some close matches. In the quarter finals, the Petrolia Pirates advanced through to the Semis with a 5-4 win gained by the Ham Hawks catching a major penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct during the final point. We also saw Rockstar Factory B defeat Adrenaline Anarchy 2-1, and the Hustlers knock out the Barrie Bandits in a hard fought 4-3 victory. Corruption were able to skillfully push out Citrus with a 4-1 victory.
The Pirates weren’t as lucky in their semi-finals match up, losing 4-1 to Hustlers, while Corruption continued their undefeated streak by adding a 4-2 win over Rockstar Factory B. However, Corruption were finally bested losing out to the Hustlers 4-3, and taking 2nd place.
In the Beginner 5-man division, we got to watch a different style of play as each player is only allowed a hopper full of paint and 2 additional pods. In this division, the Chargers Red team were able to build on their quarter -finals elimination in E2 and dominate the competition, not only making the podium in E3, but winning the event entirely. This team was a pleasure to watch and I’m sure we will see a large majority of them progress further in the future.
At mid-day, the OPL All-star game was played, seeing Dynasty coach Rusty Glaze lead the Red Team and AC Dallas player Brad McCurley coach the Black Team, with the Red Team edging out the Black Team 4-2.
